Did you know that air-leaks around your windows can increase your energy bill by 10-20% every winter? Our friends at Zaarly asked their experts for a few tips on how to seal leaks by caulking!
Check for Leaks
Take a lit candle and hold it front of your window frames. If the candle flickers, you’ve got a leak. Move the candle around to find the exact location so you can seal the gaps more effectively.
Remove Old Caulking
You’ll want to make sure the old caulking is completely removed. Use a straight-edge razor to lift it up and peel it off.
Use the Right Caulk
Be sure you are using 100% silicone based caulk.
Use a Caulking Gun
This is a cheap way to avoid a big mess. A gun allows for the best accuracy and a lot less frustration.
Smooth it Out
You can get a tool to smooth out the bead, or just use your finger to keep things simple.
Test it out!
Get your candle out again and make sure it worked!
